Meridian Color by MAGELLAN - The GPS Receiver for Serious Navigators
By Andy Afflick

This isn’t just another pretty face. The Meridian Color, the first full color display in a handheld GPS, is packed full of features that any outdoorsman would envy.

The Meridian Color is the top of the Magellan Meridian line of superior, rugged GPS receivers, featuring the industry’s first outdoor viewable 16 color LCD screen in a handheld GPS. Meridian Color comes preprogrammed with an extensive 16 MB map, including highways, major roads, parks, waterways, navaids, airports, cities and more.

The staff at Outdoor Trail Magazine had to find out first hand if this unit was the real thing, or was its beauty only skin deep.

We challenged the Meridian Color on the road as we traveled to our hunting and fishing destinations, on the lake in search of that record book catch and on the trail as we stretched the limits of our ATV. You can say this GPS passed with flying COLORS!

One of my favorite features included the Pop-up menus with 9 graphic navigation screens. The visuals are the best. I also like the fact this unit was water proof. Yes, I threw it in the water just to see if this thing would float, and it did. If someone is brave enough to put a claim on there packaging, you better believe I’m going to make sure it’s true.

Another feature that hit home with our staff was the low energy consumption. You can get up to 13 hours of continuous batter life, just like it says on the box. If you are a tech head, you’ll have fun connecting the Meridian to your PC.

If you choose the Meridian Color by MAGELLAN, you’ll be headed in the right direction. OTM tested and Approved!

Idiot Proof Archery
by Dan Afflick

As a bowhunter, I am always looking for something that will give me an edge. The next time I’m in a treestand drawing on a whitetail deer I want to have the utmost confidence in my gear and my ability to use it. My first priority in the off season seems to be on tweaking my equipment – brighter sight pins, a quieter arrow rest, less vibration from the string and so on. It wasn’t until recently that I began focusing on the most failure-prone part of the bow system – me!

I read a few articles by Bernie Pellerite and decided to take the plunge. I postponed buying another accessory and ordered his book Idiot Proof Archery. I must admit I wasn’t prepared to receive over 300 pages of insightful information. I found myself reading the book in bite-sized pieces. Reading too much at one time was like having an ice cream headache. By allowing time to reflect on a portion I read, I found the major points really stuck with me.

Above: Bernie Pellerite teaches Dan Afflick "idiot proof" archery.
Bernie advises to achieve top accuracy, it is critical you select a bow with the right draw length and draw weight. Draw length can be found using the following formula: Draw length = (Wingspan less 15) divided by 2.

Wingspan is the distance from one middle finger to the other middle finger when your arms are outstretched and your back is against a wall. For example, I am 6’2" and my wingspan is 76 inches. Using the formula: Draw length = (76 – 15) / 2 = 61 / 2 = 30.5 inches

Don’t stop there! For long fingers (like mine) subtract .5 inches:
30.5 - .5 = 30 inches

(For shorter fingers, add .5 inches. For average size no adjustment is necessary.)

If you’re like me you’ll find the draw length may be a little shorter than you have been shooting. If you’re bow’s draw length needs to be changed, it’s a good time to visit the local pro shop.

On draw weight, Bernie advises that most shooters hold 10 to 30 pounds too much weight at full draw. If you change the expression on your face when you draw your bow you are shooting too much draw weight. I currently shoot 63 pounds. Based on Bernie’s criteria, I backed it down to around 55 pounds. My bow is now much easier to hold steady.

Try adjusting your draw length and draw weight and see how much easier it is to fling the arrow where you want it. For the full story on this you really need to buy the book Idiot Proof Archery by Bernie Pellerite. If you prefer videos, Bernie also sells a full assortment that covers the material in the book and then some. Both are available at www.robinhoodvideos.com or just call Bernie (or his equally experienced wife Jan) at 614-933-0011.

Camo Glasses for Turkey Hunters
By Julie Schuster

Do you remember the quote shouted by John Paul Jones in the battle of 1812, telling his men not to fire their ship’s cannons until the enemy was close enough to see? This strategy helped Jones win the war. With turkey season soon approaching, my battles will soon be fought in the woods and on fields of green. My enemy is the very elusive American turkey who matches me wit for wit.

I am excited to introduce to you a product that will give you, the hunter, an edge this turkey season. Camo Vision’s new camouflage eye wear is that edge! As every turkey hunter knows, getting close to the bird is a key to a successful hunt. The common problem in the past has been concealing the part of the body that moves the most while hunting--the eyes. Camo Vision effectively remedies this with their patented camouflage lens. The hunter can see out unobstructed, but the game can’t see in. This eyewear is the only solution for total concealment when hunting for that trophy gobbler! The wrap around design of the eyewear allows full-range vision without obstructing your view. These also work well during rifle and bow season as well as in the duck blind.

I work for Bass Pro Outdoor World in Nashville and we have had a difficult time keeping these stocked in our store. The Polycarbonate lens meets the Lens Impact requirements specified by the FDA. They are available with Anti-Reflective coating (additional charge) and of course folks, they’re made in the good ol’ USA! Tim Jones of Omaha, Nebraska, took a world record eastern gobbler at 15 yards away with a single broadhead. "With my camouflaged eyewear I was able to hide the "whites of my eyes." This ol’ tom never saw me!" For more information on total eye concealment contact Camo Vision at camosight@tsixroads.com or check out their website at www.camovision.com.

ATA 2004 - Matthews Solocam report
By Dan Afflick

Just like kids at Christmas, archers can’t wait to see the next round of innovations from Mathews. This year they are incorporating a new InLine Grip. The grip has a vertical wood inlay that serves as a centerline reference point. It makes it easier to achieve a consistent hand position shot after shot.

If you’ve grown an emotional attachment for bows with a "Q" in their name (Q2, Q2XL, SQ2; before that MQ1 and MQ32), you will be disappointed that Mathews has discontinued the series. However, there’s no doubt that a bow in the current Mathews stable can meet your needs. The new short bow, Outback (shown here) at 31 _ ", has a forgiving brace height of 7 5/8". Outback incorporates the V-Lock limb cups, string suppressors, ball bearing roller guard and harmonic dampeners as you might expect. This bow is listed as 80% letoff (with 65% available). You should note the new Pope & Young rules permit 80% but will include an asterisk in the record book to indicate higher letoff was used.

Tournament and longer bow shooters will take note of the new Ovation. At 40" axle-to-axle and 8" brace height it is comparable to the Conquest 3 (still offered). If you were to shoot the Conquest 3 followed by the Ovation you would notice a significant improvement in smoothness, noise reduction and felt vibration. Ovation is destined to become the preferred tournament bow this year.

If you need more information go to www.mathewsinc.com or just stop by your local Mathews dealer and shoot these new bows for yourself. You won’t be disappointed with their performance.

"Hogg It" sight from Spot-Hogg
By Dan Afflick

While letting my bow down one morning I swung it out a few feet to avoid a briar bush. Big mistake. The stabilizer broke off when it hit the ground. Unfortunately the end of the stabilizer became a bowling ball hitting a strike right through my sight pins and bracket. I was done for the day. I guess experience like this makes me the ideal guy at OTM to test out the Hogg-It sight from Spot-Hogg.

The first thing you notice about the Hogg-It is that it is beefy. Made from machined aluminum, you’ll see that beefy doesn’t mean heavy. If 9.5 ounces is too much for you, then you’ll want the Hunter Hogg-It (with a shorter sight bar) at just 6.7 ounces.

I’ve long had a "Christmas tree" pin configuration. This is where your sight pins look like the outline of a tree because you are canting the bow at release. The bubble level on the Hogg-It makes this problem disappear. With the axis leveling features you’ll also eliminate left-to-rights on uphill and downhill shots as well.

Centering the circular pin guard in the peep is natural and makes aiming very easy. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’ll be surprised how much better you can shoot especially in low light conditions.

I have a one-sided relationship with my gear. I expect it to be totally forgiving of me while I am constantly abusing it. Spot-Hogg meets the challenge with a great product and a 100% lifetime guarantee (fiber optics not included).

In Search of the Top Gun
By Andy Afflick

If you had to choose one shotgun to harvest all species of game ranging from rabbit and dove to deer and turkey, which one would you choose? Is there a shotgun on the market that can do it all?

Outdoor Trail Magazine sent numerous shotgun manufacturers an invitation to participate in our Top Gun competition. Beretta, Ithaca, Browning and Benelli have eagerly put their best foot forward and have taken the challenge. Once the word gets out that this is a legitimate search for the best all-around shotgun on the market, we expect several others to hop on the bandwagon.

We’ll use each shotgun under actual hunting conditions. At the end of the season, just one will be named Top Gun. Follow us throughout the season as we give updated performance grades after each hunt. You will find that right here on our web site. We will score each gun on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best. Don’t expect any sugar coating in this test. Like the show Survivor, only one will come out shining in the end.

We invite you to make your own assessments and comments on which you think will win. Just e-mail your opinions to comments@outdoortrailmagazine.com.

Lets set the stage, the only prerequisite for entry into the competition was the shotgun had to be 12ga and had to be in a camouflage pattern. Model, barrel length and chamber size where left up to the maker.

Coming soon, we will reveal the details of each shotgun submitted. We will also share any conversations we have with any of the manufacturers during the competition. Will any of them start talking SMACK? Hit our web site often for updates.

First Annual Fishing 4Kids Invitational Tournament Hauls In More than Fish

This is one fishing tournament where everyone came away a winner. Despite the cloudy skies and early morning showers, anglers and their fishing rigs arrived right on time. The Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home put on their first fishing tournament in hopes of raising not only money, but awareness for the neglected, dependent and abused children in the state of Tennessee.

Julie Schuster puts some great fishing gear on the auction block.
The First Annual Fishing 4Kids Tournament was successful at doing both. Over $30,000 was raised through entry fees, donations and auction items. The team that raised the most money spent the day fishing with Bassmaster Classic Champion Woo Daves.

OTM donated this shirt signed by 27 Pro Anglers. The bidder paid $2000 for the shirt then gave it back to the home for display.
Next years tournament promises to be bigger and better according to tournament organizers. Major sponsors of this years tournament included Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World and Georgia Boot Company.

Not only did the team of Andy Afflick and Julie Schuster take home some hardware for coming in third, they also had the pleasure of giving away the door prizes. "What a great organization" said Afflick. "There is nothing like seeing the smiles on all these children’s faces. Thanks to all of the anglers and donors, these children will continue to smile and be blessed by the work of the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home".

Tennessee Baptist Children's Homes, Inc., was founded in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1891, to provide residential care to orphaned, neglected, abandoned, and abused children while leading them to become whole persons in Jesus Christ. Regardless of race, socio-economic status, religion, or ethnic origin, every child in need is welcomed. Tennessee Baptist Children's Homes is a benevolent ministry owned and operated by the churches of the Tennessee Baptist Convention.

Japanese Pro Becomes First Non-American to Win Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Japanese pro Takahiro Omori conjured up some last-minute heroics Sunday to become the first non-American to win the CITGO Bassmaster Classic presented by Busch Beer and capture the sport's world championship title.

The 33-year-old Tokyo native, who came to America in 1992 to become a professional angler despite knowing only one person and little English, caught his two largest bass with fewer than five minutes remaining Saturday to nail down the $200,000 top prize, trophy and title.

"This is the best day of my life," said Omori, who pounded the stage repeatedly and cried openly before the 13,200 spectators in the Charlotte Coliseum. "I've waited 18 years for my dream to come true - since I was 15.

"The money is great, but it's not about the money. It's the trophy, really. It's awesome."

Omori's final-round catch of 13_ pounds gave him a three-day total of 39 pound, 2 ounces, and a 2_-pound margin over California's Aaron Martens (36-6).

The four-time BASS winner used a variety of lures (Yamamoto and Zoom creature baits, Lunker Lure jig and a Bagley Balsa BII crankbait) to target fallen trees in shallow water in Lake Wylie and collect the winning catch.

Denny B: 1998 Classic Champion Denny Brauer came in 7th by using his famous jib technique.
On Sunday, he abandoned the jig and creature baits in favor of the crankbait as his allotted fishing time wound down, and it proved to be a timely switch. It produced bass at 1:45, 2:10 and 2:12 p.m. He stopped fishing at 2:15 p.m. to make the run back to Buster Boyd ramp by the 2:30 p.m. deadline.

"I had lost two 5-pounders (earlier in the day) and I thought it cost me the Classic," said Omori, a Japanese citizen with an immigrant visa who lives full time in Emory, Texas. "But I never give up. With fishing, you never know what is going to happen."

In addition to his Classic title, Omori earned the final berth in September's Busch Shootout, an invitation-only tournament on a mystery lake that hearkens back to the early days when the Classic location was kept secret until competitors arrived on site via a chartered plane.

Shootout competitors earned their berths by bringing in the heaviest sacks of the season on the CITGO Bassmaster Tournament Trail presented by Busch Beer. The final spot was reserved for the angler with the heaviest single-day catch at the Classic, which Omori won with his 16-2 catch in the first round.

BASS is the world's largest fishing organization, sanctioning more than 20,000 tournaments worldwide through its Federation. FLW is a Class Act
By Andy Afflick

Take a tour of FLW headquarters in Benton, Kentucky and you'll find clean and crisp decor, a board room with the FLW Championship trophy as its centerpiece and offices full of hard working employees that are passionate about their craft.

Andy Afflick, Host of OTM with Dave Washburn, Communications Director for FLW, outside FLW Headquarters.
Attend one of the FLW tournaments and you'll find the tournament staff with the same professionalism and passion. If you thought the Rockettes could operate as one unit, you should see the FLW orchestrate a launch of four hundred anglers with the grace of Fred Astaire. Without incident, all boats are checked and sent on there way.

Out performing the flawless launch is the equally perfect weigh-in of each angler, all four hundred of them. The boats arrive in five flights. Anglers bag their catch and head for the tent where friends and family wait with cameras and camcorders to record every moment.

The FLW Championship Trophy weighs 70lbs.
In a matter of seconds anglers hand their fish over to officials for a number count, walk on stage for the official weigh-in and head off with an official form with all their data. Then the fish are safely returned to swim another day.

To say I was impressed by the operations of the richest bass fishing tournament trail in history, would be an understatement.

I was equally impressed by the family environment. You could say Cheers isn't the only place where everyone knows your name. "This is my second family. This organization truly cares about each of the anglers", says current touring pro Al Gagliarducci. "When you come in to register they actually know who you are and call you by your name." This is the type of credibility, honesty and integrity the FLW has been built around.

The FLW has put excitement, entertainment and audrenaline into the bass fishing industry. When the FLW comes to a body of water near you, make sure you take the family to enjoy the Family Fun Zone and the most exciting weigh-in you'll ever see in bass fishing. If you would like additional information about the FLW, angler profiles and current standings log onto www.flwoutdoors.com.
BRAUER FENDS OFF ROOKIE CHALLENGER FOR EUFAULA VICTORY

EUFAULA, Ala. - In one of the most dramatic tournament finishes in recent memory, Missouri's Denny Brauer snatched victory and a $100,000 prize purse from Idaho's Bink Desaro on Sunday at the CITGO Bassmaster Tour presented by Busch Beer at Lake Eufaula. The BASS legend's margin of victory over his rookie challenger? A mere 3 ounces.

Brauer, who has held the lead since day two of the tournament, brought in 19-2 to narrowly escape Desaro, whom standing-room-only crowds had all but crowned the event winner. Desaro brought in 24-5 on Sunday, but couldn't overcome his more then 5-pound deficit from Saturday.

The Brauer's have been flexing their muscles on this years tournament trail.
"This is probably the most exciting tournament that I've ever won," Brauer said. "When you are sitting in back of the line and you hear a guy ahead of you weigh in 24 pounds, it kind of gets you wondering."

Brauer found his victory by fishing a StrikeKing pro model jig with a 3X chunk trailer for most of the tournament.

"I was fishing stuff so ugly that it wasn't something you could put anybody on," said Brauer, who told fans all week that he had no special fishing spots or even a set strategy. "I had never fished that area before and I was catching fish there the first two days. I didn't go back there yesterday; I wanted to let the area rest a bit.

"They quit biting at about 9 a.m., because the water was dropping. I was pitching to the edge of some vegetation, pitching to grass or anything that would come along. There were so few bites to be had, though, that it was kind of a lucky deal."

BASS is the world's largest fishing organization, sanctioning more than 20,000 tournaments worldwide through its Federation. This April, BASS introduces the all-new Bassmaster Elite 50 Series, a four-event, no-entry-fee circuit featuring a $1.6 million prize purse for the world's best anglers. The CITGO Bassmaster Tournament Trail presented by Busch Beer is the oldest and most prestigious pro bass-fishing tournament circuit and continues to set the standard for credibility, professionalism and sportsmanship as it has since 1968.

OPERATION COVER-UP
By Andy Afflick

I’m still trying to figure out our motivation for covering our company vehicle completely in camouflage. Did we just want to be able to park closer to our tree stand so we wouldn’t have to walk so far? Are we trying to hide from other hunters who might find out where our secret hot spot is located? Are we trying to get closer to wildlife so we can take better pictures? How about, it just looks COOL! Yes, That’s It.

If your significant other won’t allow the purchase of the Realtree Advantage patterned sofa or the MossyOak Breakup bedding ensemble, then your chances of covering your vehicle, ATV or boat are probably a lot better. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

After months of deliberation, we decided to take the plunge. The search was on for the perfect pattern and product for our project. Our surveys revealed that Realtrees’ Advantage Timber was the most popular pattern, so all we needed to do now was find a company that made a camo wrap for our Jeep Cherokee.

We discovered a company from Maywood Illinois called Camoclad. We met Joe Warner, the owner of Camoclad, while attending a big trade show in Orlando and met some of his staff while attending the Ducks Unlimited Festival in Memphis. After several conversations about their product, Camoclad was our choice. The 3M material they use is rugged, waterproof, scratch resistant, fade resistant and easy to apply. We also liked the ability to choose from many Realtree or MossyOak patterns.
We now had to choose a permanent or temporary application. I can’t imagine us wanting to take this camo off once we have it applied, that is unless we were permanently assigned to the North Pole and needed something in a polar bear pattern. In case that might happen, we chose the temporary version.

Joe gave us the name of a company that would complete the project for us. We put Operation Cover-Up in the hands of Auto Trim Design located in Paris, Tennessee. We dropped of an ordinary vehicle and will be picking up an outdoorsman’s pride and joy.

When we picked up our project, I couldn’t believe how great it looked. Tim, at Auto Trim Design, just became my best friend. He did a perfect job with the application. It looks like a tree with wheels.

We now have the most popular vehicle in the Mid-South. Last week when I walked out of Bass Pro Shops in Nashville, there was a crowd around the Jeep looking, rubbing and feeling the Jeep like it was something that just fell out of the sky. I first thought someone was trying to steal my vehicle. Luckily I don’t get the same response from wildlife. I’ve gotten as close as fifteen yards from wild deer. Once I stopped the Jeep, it was like I disappeared.

If you’ve been thinking about putting camo on your ATV, truck or boat, go for it. Get ready for stares of envy. Contact Camoclad at: 1-800-585-8550. Contact Auto Trim Design at: 1-731-642-8621. Look for us in your neck of the woods, that is, if you can see us.

Duck Hunting in Stuttgart is a Dream Come True
Seeing the sky black with ducks is something I had only seen in my dreams, that is until I visited the Duck Hunting Capital of the World - Stuttgart, Arkansas. I had always heard that Stuttgart was the place to go if duck hunting was your game. So, Stuttgart here we come.

Because I didn’t know much about the area and where to go to get into some of the worlds greatest wing shooting, I called Stuart Wolcott from Primm Springs Wildlife Company based out of Primm Springs, Tennessee. Wolcott is a professional hunting guide that can put you on some world class turkey, bucks as well as ducks. If you don’t know the area you’re going to be hunting, it’s best to hire a guide who can make sure your adventures go smoothly.

The Outdoor Trail Magazine Pro Staff arrived early Friday to make sure we had plenty of rest before leaving out early Saturday morning. The smell of bacon, ham and sausage cooking on the stove woke everyone up at 4am. Larry, the lodge cook, knew we wouldn’t need an alarm with the aroma of breakfast filtering down the hall and into our rooms. Before Larry could put the morning meal on the table, we had fork in hand. With our stomach full and gear packed we were off to the prairies of Stuttgart that I’d heard so much about.

There would be no disappointment here. Within a short period we had depleted our shell supply and had our limit of ducks hang neatly on our lanyards. This hunting trip was everything I thought it would be. The birds locked in their landing gear over the decoys giving us some great shooting opportunities. The dogs worked to perfection as they retrieved singles, doubles and a few lucky triples. It all happened so fast.

So what did we do with the remainder of the day? We headed for downtown Stuttgart, home of the Wings of the Prairie Festival and World Champion Duck Calling Championship. After having a few funnel cakes and watching the competition we headed to Mack’s Prairie Wings, the ultimate candy store for duck hunters. A die hard duck hunter would only have enough cash to pay for gas to get home. Needless to say, when I got home my pockets were empty.

If you would like the duck hunting experience of a lifetime call Primm Springs Wildlife Company and schedule a trip to Stuttgart. Call 1-931-729-0392 or log on www.primmspringswildlifecompany.com.

The Duck Commander "Unplugged"
The Duck Commander, Phil Robertson, drops by OTM for a visit during a recent live show in Nashville.
When we invited Phil Robertson "The Duck Commander" into the studio of Outdoor Trail Magazine for a live appearance, we expected the unexpected. That is exactly what we received.

Robertson wasn’t worried that PETA might be listening. He was quick to mention that he would never shoot a duck swimming on the water. He would wait till the duck stopped swimming.

Robertson is a professional duck guide and duck call maker. You may have seen Robertson’s television shows or videos featuring hunts from all across the country.

It’s a pleasure to bring you an excerpt of our recent visit with the Legendary Phil Robertson.

Andy:
Phil welcome to Nashville!
Phil: It’s great to be here. You know Andy there is hope for the country, I rolled into town last night and had a plate full of cornbread. I get up this morning and I hear this women on your show talking about killing turkeys and hear another women say she would pick a duck. I thought to myself, "you know, Tennessee isn’t half bad".
Andy: Duck season is over, give us a few tips for storing and cleaning our gear for next year.
Phil: Well, we keep our boat in the woods year round. We leave the plug out and keep it on dry ground. About every two weeks we go out there and crank the engine to make sure it still runs. We keep our duck blind out year round. It’s tied to a long rope because up hear in Louisiana the water fluctuates some much. We clean out our coffee pots and give the blind good de-wasping.
Andy: If I were to walk into your duck blind, what would I find?
Phil: You will find 110 feet of shooting porch. It has three sides and will hold thirty five hunters. We have bunks, stoves, and all kinds of cooking gear.
Andy:
Why would you need a duck blind that would hold thirty five hunters?
Phil: Well, take the number of hunters you have and times that by the limit of ducks you can kill. That’s a lot of ducks.
Andy:
How do you maintain your decoys?
Phil: Our decoys are deflated. We use those feather-light inflatable decoys, so all we have to do is let the air out and put them in a box.
Andy:
What about duck calls?
Phil: I’m going on record as saying here "the only thing I know of that will lock up a duck call immediately is snuff". Just locks it right up. You need to clean your reeds. Once a year you just need to replace them. Biscuits will clog up a call as well. There are two kinds of people that mess with duck calls, and they are World Champion duck callers and World Champion duck killers. You know, if a duck entered the competition in Stuttgart he wouldn’t even make the first cut. A duck couldn’t win the duck call competition. It’s a totally different ball game.

The Duck Commander went on to give us a full length demonstration of all the duck calls he has hand crafted. Hearing Robertson go through the routine of a pintail to the sounds of a mallard was nothing short of entertaining. You can check out all of Robertson’s calls, videos and other outdoor gear by logging on www.duckcommander.com.

Be sure and tune in Outdoor Trail Magazine every Saturday morning live 5am till 6am CST. Call in and talk to the Legends and the Pro’s. O.T.M. is Everything Outdoors.
Shot in Vegas by Andy Afflick
Shot in Vegas

Above: Tent Cot by Kamp-Rite
If you haven’t heard by now, the National Shooting Sports Foundation recently held its annual Shot Show in Las Vegas. Manufacturers of shooting, hunting and other outdoor gear gather to put on their best of show in hopes of luring the eyes of retailers. There were several items we felt deserved recognition for their design and functionality.

Above: Rackulator
We really liked the portability and design of the Tent Cot by Kamp-Rite. It’s a comfortable cot with a tent attached. The mesh doors and windows make the Tent Cot insect-proof as well as provide full air flow. Tent Cot sets up in less than five minutes, has its own carrying case and is offered in the single or double sleeper. Check out the Tent Cot at www.tentcot.com.

Above: The Tommy Gun
What do you call a tool that will digitally measure the rack of bucks? How about "Rackulator". Produced by a company with the same name, the Rackulator is the world’s only electronic calculating big game scoring tool. Roll the wheel of the Rackulator along each beam and you’ll get an instant score. With its easy to use menu, not only will scoring your buck be faster, it will be fun as well. Just for grins, see if you measure up. Roll the wheel along your arms and legs as well as around your waist, then check to see what class you would be according to each of the scoring organizations. Check out the Rackulator at www.rackulator.com.

The next product isn’t new in design by any means, but it caught our eye because of its coating. Nothing beats a gold plated .45 caliber semi-automatic Thompson. Nicknamed the Tommy Gun, I imagine the gold version will never see a cartridge in its chamber. This just might be the gift for the shooting enthusiast that has everything. Visit www.tommygunshop.com.
There's No Business Like Show Business by Andy Afflick
Above: Aaron Tippin joins Andy Afflick for some Outdoor Conversationat the ATA show in Indy.
Much like the auto industries debut of new models at the Detroit Auto Show, the archery industry brings out their new and improved innovations each year at the Archery Trade Associations trade show. This years ATA show was held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Over 500 archery manufacturers set up booths displaying their products in hopes of catching the eye of retailers. Most retailers will order directly from the manufacturers in order to take advantage of early buying discounts. Hopefully those discounts will be passed along to the consumer.

According to some of the major manufacturers, orders for 2004 exceeded that of 2003. This could be the shot in the arm the archery industry needed to rebound from sluggish sales and interest.

Above: Pro-Staffer Dan Afflick tries out the new $2600.00 GYRO-TECH bow from HI-TEC Archery.
The sad thing about going to one of these trade shows, is that you realize that consumers will never see half the products that are available. If the retailer in your area doesn’t feel the item will sell, and can make a profit, you’ll never know it existed.

There were several items that drew our attention. HI-TEC Archery unveiled its GYRO-TEC. This bow uses gimble technology that allows the grip to free float by pivoting horizontally and vertically. The new technology isn’t what drew our attention, it was the $2600.00 price tag. We did shoot the bow a few times, but not enough to decide if it was worth the asking price.

We enjoyed being introduced to a new product called "BowBoogers". It’s the new wave of bow silencers. It takes the noise and vibration out of your bow string much like whiskers or leaches. BowBoogers comes in a small plastic can. It has the consistency of, well, boogers. You reach in and pull out a marble size piece, roll it into a ball and apply it to your bow string in the same location you would put any other silencer. It can also be applied to any area of the bow that has vibration. It’s snot on the market yet but the producers of the sticky substance, BowTech Archery, say it will be on the shelf soon.

Above: Will Primos gives the Outdoor Trail Magazine Pro Staff the details on the new Primos game calls for 2004.
One other product we really liked was the Sportsman’s Buggy. Made by Dan-D Outdoor Products, the buggy was designed to carry your bow while shooting 3-D archery or other competitive tournaments. The buggy is a modified golf bag cart the holds your bow, stool, water bottle, towel and arrow lubricants. How many times have we gone to a shoot and had to lay our bow on the ground because there were no bow holders available on the course? The Sportsman’s Buggy is also available in the sporting clay and fishing configuration. You can find out more information about the products mention by logging onto their web site.

At each trade show you not only get to see the newest products on the market, but you also get to spend some time with the pros that use them. Attending this year’s show included Chuck Adams, Bob Foulkrod, Walter Parrot, Ted Nugent, Jim Kelly, Jackie Bushman, David Blanton and many more.

Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame by Andy Afflick
Above: Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, Executive Producer/Host of Outdoor Trail Magazine Andy Afflick, TV Personality and Outdoor Writer Wade Bourne
It was an experience this outdoor writer will never forget. Shoulder to shoulder with six of the true legends of the great outdoors. It was at the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame that drew these six individuals to the podium for a heartfelt acceptance speech that would leave everyone with a totally new respect for the one that delivered it.

The Legends chosen have given back to the outdoors more than they have taken. Not only have these legends cultivated an excitement about their role in the outdoors, they have also taken under their wings the role of fostering outdoor education and conservation.

The class of 2003 included Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, the "First Women of Hunting" Brenda Valentine, duck calling champion and duck call designer Mike McLemore, outdoor writer and photographer Sock Clay, television personality and outdoor writer Wade Bourne, founder of the Bass Angler Sportsman Society Ray Scott and famous smallmouth fisherman the late Billy Westmoreland.

To this class of Legends, we say "Thank You" for the contributions and sacrifices you have given in order for us to learn, enjoy and respect the best backdrop God could have ever given, The Great Outdoors.

A special thanks to Buchanan Resort for providing a breathtaking view of Kentucky Lake from the deck of our warm cabin. And thanks to Garry Mason of Adventures Outdoors for realizing that it was the Legends of the Outdoors that have blazed the trails that we all enjoy today.

14th Annual Reelfoot Lake Waterfowl Festival by Andy Afflick
You would think ninety degree temperatures would keep any outdoorsman indoors watching the outdoors on TV. Not the case for the hundreds of visitors and exhibitors at the 14th Annual Reelfoot Lake Waterfowl Festival held in the town of Samburg Tennessee. Samburg is located in the Northwestern corner of the state, nudged up against Reelfoot Lake.

One of the highlights of the festival is the sanctioned regional goose and duck calling contests. Winners advance to the world competitions. The Goose World Champion will be crowned in Easton Maryland and the Duck World Champion will be crowned in Stuttgart Arkansas. Needless to say a lot of folks had their game face on as they prepared for the tough competition. Some of the ladies attending prepared by wearing earplugs. They may have been the mothers of those competing.

Congratulations to Nick Cottrell of Hopkinsville Kentucky for being crowned the Grand American Goose Calling Champion and hats off to Slayton Gearing from Gleason Tennessee for capturing the Grand American Duck Calling Championship.

When you’re around people who love the outdoors and love the camaraderie that flourishes with events such as this, most of us forget all about the weather, the stressful job, the boat payment and what time we are suppose to be home.

• Roland Rolls On
New Orleans: He proved that he can still bring home the bass. Roland Martin came in forth in his 25th appearance in the Bassmaster Classic. He earned $35,000 for his efforts. Roland relied on a mixed bag to haul in his limit of five bass each day. His selections included a spinner bait, tube jig and floating worm. On day two of competition Roland lost two good keepers, a five pound bass and a three pound bass.

OTM creator and host, Andy Afflick, joined Roland on the second day of the Classic. Andy said “I watch every cast and every turn of the reel, I didn’t miss a thing. What a great opportunity it was to spend the entire day in the Bassmaster Classic with one the greatest legends in fishing. It’s a day I’ll never forget”. For more details on the Classic go to www.bassmaster.com.

It takes Roland and Andy two hours and twenty minutes to travel 111 miles to get to their destination before ever wetting a line. Now that’s a boat ride!

• Julie Schuster
"Better late than never" might be a good way to describe Julie Schuster’s hunting experience. Growing up in rural Minnesota, she spent plenty of time outdoors and in the woods as a youngster, but wasn’t seriously introduced to hunting until years later when her husband invited her along on an elk hunt in Colorado. Just an observer on that first trip, she soon celebrated success of her own by taking elk and antelope, and the rest is a part of her growing history as an avid hunter. She has since expanded her interests to archery and black powder, hunting deer, turkey, dove, and just about anything else when given the opportunity. She will not hesitate to step into a bass boat or heft a fly rod on a mountain stream, further rounding her experience as a consummate outdoorswoman.

Working at the Nashville location of the nation’s largest outdoor supplier, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, Julie stays up with the latest in the hunting and fishing industries. Not only is she a capable writer, but is also an accomplished photographer. Her articles have appeared in local publications and is regularly featured in West Tennessee Outdoors Magazine. Julie and her husband Darrell live in Pegram, Tennessee.

Julie will be bringing you the latest news and stories about Women in the Outdoors. Not only will you enjoy the informational and educational aspect of Julie’s stories, you’ll embrace her warm and witty personality. If you have questions or comments for Julie, e-mail them to prostaff@outdoortrailmagazine.com.

• Troy Goldsby
Growing up in Florence, AL, Troy Goldsby spent a lot of time hunting and fishing all over north Alabama. He also spent a lot of time water skiing on Wilson and Guntersville Lakes on the Tennessee River, and hunting in northwest Louisiana where both of his parents were raised. It was only natural for Troy to want to become a biologist, but exactly what he wanted to do in that field was not obvious until 1999.

Troy was living in southern Tennessee with his wife Noelle when the opportunity to work as a biologist for Aquaservices, Inc. arose. Aquaservices was founded in 1982 by his father, and has since become the leading company in lake and pond management in the southeast. His father, Terry Goldsby, received his masters in botany from Northwestern State University of Louisiana, and worked for the state of Florida and TVA before founding Aquaservices. Aquaservices also employs Bryan Goldsby (biologist), Stephen Turner (fisheries biologist), and other professional and field staff. Aquaservices is the inaugural sponsor of Outdoortrail Magazine on the radio on 104.5 the Zone out of Nashville, TN.

Since beginning his career with Aquaservices, Troy has worked all over the southeast for corporations, governmental agencies, and private homeowners, including Bill Dance. He works in each aspect of the business. These aspects include aquatic vegetation control, pond design, fish stocking, liming, fertilizing, electro-fishing surveys, and complete pond and lake management. Troy has written articles for Southern Ponds and Wildlife and Bill Dance Fishing Illustrated Magazine.

Although Aquaservices is based in Guntersville, AL, Troy still resides in southern Tennessee (a.k.a. Hunter’s Paradise) with his wife and daughter Josie who is now 3 years old. He just can’t seem to bring himself to move when he is so deeply rooted in Lawrence and Wayne Counties where he spends as much time as possible in the outdoors. Aquaservices is growing by leaps and bounds so you can look for troy pulling an airboat or electro-fishing rig in a town near you. You can also e-mail him at troyg@aquaservicesinc.com or check out the Aquaservices web site at www.aquaservicesinc.com.

• BASSIN BABES by Julie Schuster
Mary DiVincenti, winner of the Women's Classic.
Did you know that the first document done on fishing is attributed to a woman? That woman was Dame Juliana Berners, a 15th – century English nun and noblewoman. Women have always been a part of the cultural fishing scene and now because of organizations such as the W.B.F.A. (Women’s Bass Fishing Association) their dreams of being competitive in the sport are now being realized. A sport once thought of as exclusive to men is now a profession for these women anglers.

My first encounter with the W.B.F.A. was in April of this past year. I was invited by Dianna Rogers, one of the circuit professionals, to participate as an amateur angler in the event. This meant I would be able to fish along side a pro in her boat and compete in the amateur division. What a fantastic experience! These women are experienced, well equipped, and fish for all it’s worth. I was impressed with the level of professionalism as well as hard work they put into the sport.

Louisiana was host to the Classic World Championship of Women’s Bass Fishing held on the Red River near Shreveport, August 17-23. The W.B.F.A. conducted the tournament in which the top 34 women anglers from 12 different states participated. This event had them competing for the title of World Champion and a fully rigged Triton TR-18 bass boat. The total prize package for all the anglers was valued at just over $50,000.00. Not bad for a few days of fishing! Let me tell you from experience, these women earn that money--they are focused and work hard when out on that water!

Mary DiVincenti of Clinton, Louisiana captured the title of World Champion for the event. She eagerly hooked into some nice size bass the first day of the tournament claiming one of only two 5-fish limits for the day totaling 12.45 pounds. Donna Newberry of Van Buren, Arkansas was close behind with a day total of 11.71 pounds. For the first morning "blast off" it was a balmy 85 degrees at 5:30 am! Mary commented on her first day tactics, "I established a hot weather pattern during practice and stuck with it. I would get a little more detailed on exactly which baits I used, but there are still two days of competition." Donna, also pleased with her day’s results, was going to stick with her planned strategy.

Day two found Mary bringing in another 5-fish limit totaling 12.96 pounds. "I found the fish in thick brush and water hyacinths in 18 inches of water. When the pattern held on the first day of competition, I knew that unless there was a drastic change in the weather, the pattern would hold during competition. I worked a spinner bait and buzz bait." Judy Wong, 2-time defending World Champion from Sugarland, Texas, brought in the biggest stringer for the tournament, 17.29 pounds, which was her second day total. This moved her into second place behind Mary DiVincenti.

The final day of competition found Mary coming to the scales with a solid 5-fish limit of 10.48 pounds, approximately 6 pounds ahead of her bassin competitors. Her overall 3-day total of 35.89 pounds was enough for Mary to capture the title of World Champion! Judy Wong claimed second place with 29.55 pounds, Pam-Martin Wells of Bainbridge, Georgia took third place with 21.84 pounds. Sheri Glasgow from Muskogee, Oklahoma weighed in a total of 21.30 pounds for fourth place and Donna Newberry rounded out the top five with a weight of 19.88 pounds. Weigh to go (no pun intended) ladies!

The W.B.F.A. is the only professional bass tournament trail designed for women anglers. The ladies fish five tournaments each year to earn qualifying points to fish the Classic Tournament. Whether or not it will ever reach the popularity and exposure of men’s bass fishing events, these women deserve a place in the hierarchy of the sport. "Gone like the privacy of the tavern, is the all-male sanctity of fishing. Women undoubtedly started fishing out of curiosity, but many have learned to love it and some have actually become good at it." (Holiday Magazine, July 1948)
