Living with White-tailed Deer education program

National Science Teachers Association recommends QDMA's 'Living with White-tailed Deer' program

Bogart, GA -
The National Science Teachers Association has announced its review and recommendation of “Living with White-tailed Deer,” an interactive classroom program on urban/suburban deer issues from the Quality Deer Management Association.

The NTSA’s panel of reviewers includes top-flight teachers and other outstanding science educators who only recommend the best available supplements for science teaching.

“This is appropriate for both middle and secondary students,” NSTA reviewer Richard Smith writes, “and the material is well correlated to the National Science Education Standards. This material is well-thought-out and would enhance any biology or environmental science class.”

“Living with White-tailed Deer” meets national academic standards in environmental education, science, social studies and civics. The program is an international winner of The Wildlife Society’s Conservation Education Award, and it is a national winner of the Outdoor Writers Association of America’s Golden Eco Award, which is given to the top conservation-education production.

“Living with White-tailed Deer” includes a three-part, DVD-based video and an interactive CD-ROM with printable support materials in PDF format. “LWWTD” is intended to serve as the basis for a week-long classroom activity for students in grades 7-12.

“LWWTD” is available now from the QDMA for $29.95, plus shipping and handling. Discounts are available to educators. Please call the QDMA at (800) 209-3337 for details. A video-based version intended for general-public distribution will be available from QDMA later this year. www.QDMA.com

Ducks Unlimited Turns 70

DU celebrates seven decades of conserving North America’s wetlands and waterfowl

Memphis, TN -
January 25, 2007 - This is a big year for Ducks Unlimited (DU). On top of its usual conservation work, field research and fund-raising events, DU commemorates its 70th anniversary on Monday, January 29, 2007.

For DU and its supporters, reaching this milestone is a source of pride and cause for celebration. This is especially true considering that war, recession and periods of continental drought did not always make the road to 70 a smooth one. Yet, through good times and bad, Ducks Unlimited has endured and remains focused on a single mission: to conserve North America’s waterfowl populations and the habitats they depend upon.

“Much of our success can be attributed to a remarkable assemblage of dedicated volunteers, who generously give of their time, talent and wealth to organize fund-raising events in support of DU’s conservation mission,” said Don Young, DU’s executive vice president.

Since 1937, DU’s membership has grown from 6,720 members to a current total of 750,000 throughout North America. DU has more than 60,000 volunteers and 3,665 chapters in the United States and Canada. During the past year, these men and women provided the leadership to host more than 4,600 DU events. And DU is continuing to grow and strengthen its volunteer ranks, recruiting 9,500 new volunteers and holding events associated with 355 new chapters during the past year alone.

DU’s success has also been achieved through countless partnerships with private landowners, government agencies, corporations, foundations and numerous conservation organizations.

To continue that success, DU launched the Wetlands For Tomorrow campaign last year. This comprehensive campaign marks the largest conservation campaign in history, and seeks to raise $1.7 billion within seven years. The campaign focuses on strategic initiatives to save today’s most vulnerable and valuable waterfowl habitats.

DU’s 70th anniversary is a good time to look forward as well as back, said Young. “Ducks Unlimited’s history is something all DU supporters can take pride in. DU people should not only draw strength and inspiration from our 70 years of extraordinary conservation work, but also stay committed to take on the conservation challenges of today and tomorrow.”

Dan Sharley : A Passion for Painting & Fishing

Dan Sharley
Dan Shirley, artist and fisherman, developed a passion for art around the same time he found his love for fishing -- as a child growing up in Memphis, Tenn. While his early fishing pursuits found him dunking crickets and worms for bream and bass, he also made time to start drawing his favorite things.

As his talent blossomed, Dan discovered an inspirational medium for which to work -- watercolor. His paintings feature a blend of washes, broad-strokes and intricate detail, as he seeks to find harmony between abstractness and realism. While his interests and subjects may vary, Dan is always comfortable painting what he knows best... fish and fishing.

Dan credits his parents for encouraging him to pursue his art, and he finds immeasurable support from his wife, Betsy. Ever true to his passions, he fills much of his spare time either fishing or dreaming about fishing.

Artist and Angler Net Big Win

Nashville, TN – Capitol Recording Artist, Amber Dotson, and Professional Angler, Paul Elias took home bragging rights and the Championship Trophy with their weight of 8.14 at the 2nd Annual CMA Music Fest Artist/Angler Bass Fishing Tournament. They beat the other nine teams by cranking underwater structure.

As we pulled our Outdoor Trail Magazine Triton TR20-X Series boat close to the team of Elias & Dotson to take a few photos, Paul said “one more cast, and then we’ll head to another spot”. On that last cast, Elias pulled in a nice smallmouth bass with the help of Dotson who handled the net like a pro.

Guys, watch out, Dotson uses a bait casting reel and can throw a crankbait just as far as Elias. Could Dotson be the first female to win the coveted Bassmaster Classic? If it were up to her, she’d fish for a living just like the pros. But until then, she’ll keep recording songs and opening shows for George Strait.

For more information on Amber Dotson visit www.amberdotson.com or www.capitolnashville.com.

Outdoor Trail Magazine Host to MC at CMA Music Festival

Nashville, TN – It is Country Music’s Biggest Party, the CMA Music Festival from June 9th – 12th. Over 140,000 Country Music Fans will converge on downtown Nashville to enjoy concerts, autograph signings and the Sports Zone.

In the middle of all the activities will be OTM host Andy Afflick. Afflick got a call from CMA organizer asking if he would be the Master of Ceremony for the Bassmasters Artist and Anglers Fishing Tournament.

The tournament pairs professional anglers with celebrities. The team with the heaviest weight of bass will win the coveted trophy and bragging rights.

“I’m honored that they chose me, they could have chosen Brad Paisley or someone like Little Jimmy Dickens” Afflick said. “Last year Billy Dean was talking smack, and I think he’s coming back this year to pick up where he left off. You know some of these celebrities are really good anglers”.

The Bassmaster Angler and Artist tournament will be held Sat., June 11th 9am till 3pm with the official weigh-in held at the Citco Bassmaster Tour Stage on the East side of the Titans Coliseum.
